Overview

The Music department at Christ’s School aims to instil a lifelong love and appreciation of music in all students, through ensuring a high quality of teaching, learning and students’ musical experiences across the curriculum and in extra-curricular provision.

The curriculum is designed so that students  build on their understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music throughout the key stages, exploring and demonstrating these through increasing skill in performing, composing and appraising music.  Students are encouraged to find and refine their unique musical voice through their increasing musical understanding and musical skill over the key stages, expressing themselves uniquely.  We work in and through diverse music from many genres, cultures and eras, reflecting both our school community and the wider world of music, giving access and enjoyment to students as they make music.

Facilities

The Music Department has its own purpose-built music block at Christ’s.  There are two main teaching classrooms in the building.  The classroom upstairs has a range of musical instruments for practical music making, while downstairs there is a suite of Mac computers where students often create music through technology.  We have a number of practice rooms with pianos, keyboards, guitars, amps and drum kits.  These rooms are used for individual instrumental lessons and for students to use for practice outside class time.

Key Stage 3

The Key Stage 3 Music curriculum is a fun and creative journey that introduces students to the world of sound, rhythm, and melody. Through exciting lessons, students explore a variety of musical styles—from pop and rock to classical and world music—while learning to play instruments, compose original pieces, and develop their singing skills. With hands-on activities like group performances, digital music production, and improvisation, students discover the joy of making music and expressing themselves creatively. This curriculum lays a strong foundation for future musical exploration, building confidence and a love for music that lasts a lifetime.

Key Stage 4

Edexcel GCSE Music offers a vibrant and creative course that allows students to explore their passion for music through performing, composing, and listening. Covering a wide range of genres from classical and jazz to popular and world music, students gain a deep understanding of musical theory, history, and technical skills. They will develop their performance abilities on their chosen instrument or voice, compose original pieces, and analyze set works in detail. This course fosters creativity, musical expression, and critical listening, preparing students for further study or careers in music, production, and the performing arts.
