Overview

The Maths department strives to provide an inspiring learning environment where students enjoy learning Maths. Our focus over the seven-year curriculum is to develop students’ confidence in Maths focusing on skills they will require in their future professions.

We aim to raise learners’ awareness of careers in STEM related graduate jobs. These careers range from various types of engineering including energy sector, construction and telecommunications to film industry and finance.

Facilities

The Maths department has access to chromebooks to support students’ learning in lessons. They also have access to the SPARX homework platform which sets differentiated homework and supports students’ revision and knowledge retention. A set of textbooks is available for students in the classroom as well as a department website with additional revision resources including all schemes of work and links to the careers in Maths. KS4 students can buy additional revision guides available on the school's website.

Key Stage 3

The Key Stage 3 Maths curriculum offers an exciting and dynamic exploration of essential mathematical concepts, designed to build confidence and problem-solving skills. Students dive into a wide range of topics, including algebra, geometry, probability, statistics, and number theory. Through engaging activities and real-world applications, they develop their ability to think logically, analyze patterns, and tackle complex problems. With a focus on building a solid foundation for future learning, this curriculum encourages curiosity and creativity in mathematics, helping students to see the subject as both practical and enjoyable, preparing them for success in GCSEs and beyond.

In KS3, we aim to support students through differentiated homework and additional maths lessons focusing on knowledge retention and numeracy skills. We also aim to motivate and inspire our students through offering stretch and challenge in every lesson, Maths competitions, enrichment classes and school trips.

Students sit regular cumulative assessments which support their knowledge retention. Revision lists are always provided prior to the assessments.

Key Stage 4

KS4 students study a two-year GCSE course following Edexcel 9-1 specifications. Students are split in two tiers based on their KS3 attainment level and target grades. In year 10 and 11, students study each topic once and their knowledge retention is supported through revision and homework schedule. With the exception of a few, the majority of topics students already studied at KS3 but this time, students face more challenging content at GCSE level. The schemes of work are available on Maths website.

Students in year 10 sit three cumulative assessments each term. Revision lists are shared with students and parents and they are linked to SPARX independent learning tasks. In year 11, students have two assessments in Autumn term, one of them being whole school PPE. Spring term follows the same schedule.
