Overview
The Modern Foreign Languages department at Christ’s School aims to inspire a love of language learning and an awareness and acceptance of different cultures.
We understand the importance of communication in an increasingly globalised world and the majority of our students study at least one foreign language to GCSE level.
Our Curriculum aims to enable students to develop their ability to communicate confidently, developing language-learning skills that will prepare them for further language study. Also, it provides awareness and understanding of the culture and identity of the countries and communities where the language is spoken.
Facilities
The languages department has four large classrooms each fitted with an interactive white board.
The department is well-equipped with the latest text books and subscriptions to a number of online language sites such as Linguascope and Quizlet. The department often makes use of the library and computer rooms to support the students’ learning.
Key Stage 3
The Key Stage 3 MFL curriculum is an exciting introduction to French or Spanish, packed with interactive lessons that bring languages to life! Students begin their journey by learning how to speak, listen, read, and write in everyday situations, such as talking about family, hobbies, food, and holidays. Through fun activities like games, role-plays, and cultural projects, they explore Spanish or French-speaking countries and their vibrant traditions. This course sparks curiosity and builds confidence in communication, setting the stage for further language learning and a lifelong love for exploring new cultures.
Key Stage 4
GCSE in a modern foreign language opens the door to an exciting world of language and culture, allowing students to develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in a fun and interactive way. Through real-life scenarios, engaging topics like travel, technology, and global issues, students learn to communicate confidently in French or Spanish. The course also offers insights into French or Spanish-speaking countries, deepening cultural awareness and global perspectives. Whether mastering conversations or exploring films, music, and traditions, GCSE French or Spanish is an exciting journey that equips students with valuable language skills for travel, careers, and further study.
